I think the original treehouses went unused for a very long time and then were damaged from a storm, so they had to tear them down.

They do seem to scream "The 70's!" from the outside, but it's probably better that they blend in with the trees.

The treehouses were one of my favorite places in WDW to stay as a kid and I'm looking forward to staying there again.

The tree houses look great. Althought I think I would have preferred wrap around desks on them all. I think that would have given them a more "tree house" feel.

Actually most of the previous tree houses did not go unoccupied they were being used for housing of international cast members. Disney could not rent out the tree houses as they did not meet current code, but they could use them for housing. Somewhere along the line, some Disney exec got the idea that money could be made if they tore them down and replaced them with Tree House DVC properties, a wise move.
