They have spread them out a little longer recently due to the upcoming extended closure (about 6 months) next spring to install the new vehicles with separate seats. They didn't want it to be closed at the same time of year, two years in a row, if possible, so that folks who only come once a year wouldn't miss it. The extended Splash refurb this spring also played into the timing of the late refurb this year. I'm on my phone, so I can't check the calendar, but I think this downtime is only about 6 weeks. Yes, the timing of it may be inconvenient, but it's certainly not closing forever.

Some of the other long-term maintenance issues stem from the fact that the ride is 52 years old, and was the first of its kind. The great maintenance they've been doing on it has kept it running far longer than the expectancy of most coasters.

My understanding is that it will close just after the peak period (much like Splash did this year), and remain closed until sometime in early summer, when it's supposed to have new bobsleds (and there's a chance of a single rider line too).
