I have to admit, I don't see the excitement.

The only similarities is that both shows feature Mickey and a song from "The Little Mermaid", although Philharmagic uses "Part of Your World" and Map uses "Under the Sea". Personally, I like both Philharmagic and Magical Map.

I LOVE Mermaid and feel that the music is wonderful; but, I also feel that they're starting to oversaturate the DLR parks with The Little Mermaid music, just a little. Again, just a very minor quibble. Otherwise, I really like Magical Map.

That'd be like comparing Captain EO to Festival of the Lion King. They both have music and both audiences sit in chairs, but that's about where the similarities end.

I haven't troubled myself to look that the video, but I never understood the appeal of character stage shows.

She's also featured in Fantasmic!. I also agree that they're a oversaturated with the Mermaid stuff, and at a certain point it just seems a little lazy. It's good music, and certainly something that people expect from Disney, but they don't need to use it in every possible venue

But I'm still confused by Donny's comparison between Magical Map and PhilharMagic. Two very different types of attractions.

The more rational comparison would be Mickey & The Magical Map to the other (and only) musical stage show at Magic Kingdom Park, also performed in Fantasyland. It's called Dream Along With Mickey, it's performed on the massive stage in front of the Castle they built there in the 1990's, and it's typically corny and cheeseball.

Just watch the first 60 seconds here, and you'll get the idea. You even get the entire plot explained to you by Minnie in under 5 seconds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...HkAQ2wSM

So that's where the Kids Of The Kingdom ended up! I'd lost track of them sometime during the Carter Administration.

ORDDU: And I'd hardly want to insult the talents of Disneyland musicians by calling them corny. That's quite an exageration in order to make a point that isn't quite valid. Disney usually hires top notch musicians for their entertainment departments.

ORWEN: Didn't Walt Disney once say he liked corn?

ORGOCH: Sure did! An' I like the cob! Comes in handy fer all sorts a things...

I'm not saying that I don't like theme park shows. Aladdin is very good, and when I was growing up the Golden Horseshoe Revue and the Polynesian Revue at the Tahitian Terrace were two of my favorite attractions. What I find perplexing is the fascination some people have with character stage shows. I can't take them.

But let's be honest, the character musical shows are pretty corny. Although Aladdin is of a Broadway caliber, and at 40 minutes long is quite obviously something different than the usual 20 minute outdoor musical review. But most of the other stage shows in the theme parks aren't exactly My Fair Lady. They are snappy and upbeat and toe-tapping rambunctious romps with the most basic of plotlines that a kindergartner could follow for 20 minutes. And God love 'em, they are corny.

I'm not necessarily against corny all the time either, I can corn it up with the best of them.
But the shows they have, can't really be considered anything but corny.
I'd probably be interested in seeing the show once, cuz like I said, I can corn it up, but after that I doubt there would be much need or interest in seeing it again.
That's why I was against putting a show in that area. It's just so predictable and unrepeatable.

I have always wanted TDA to go big and bring back the Kids Of The Kingdom; that horrible yet fabulous version of Up With People that used to hold court at Tomorrowland Terrace in the Nixon through Carter years. In matching sweater sets. And bouncy hair. And perky, perky, perky smiles. Did I mention they had to be perky?
