That said, my favorite mint julep recipe is far different than the ones they make at DL. It's about 3 parts bourbon, 1 part simple syrup, with some meddled mint leaves and cracked ice. But unless you can get into Club 33, there's no way to order one like that in DL

New Orleans Square Mint Julep Recipe

    Makes Approximately 2/3 gallon

    Ingredients:

    1 cup Sugar
    3 tsp. Lime Juice Concentrate
    3 cups Soda Water
6 tbsp. Crme DeMenthe (hard to find, but this is important)
    6 oz. thawed Lemonade Concentrate

    Directions:

Dissolve sugar into soda water. Add lime juice and lemonade and bring to boil. Remove from heat and add Crme DeMenthe. Chill.

    To serve:

Combine 3 parts syrup to 5 parts water, add mint, and skewer two pineapple slices and a cherry. Serve chilled (add ice cubes if necessary).

In a non-alcoholic version you just don't get that, so it's just the mint and (in DL's version), the overwhelming sweetness. To each his own, but I find DL's to taste like cough syrup.
