I’ll set up this trip report by saying that my sister and I are very close, along with my mom. However do to our lifestyles we don’t get a lot of time just the three of us anymore. My sister is married with a son who plays basketball all year long, my brother-in-law has a crazy work schedule and my sister is a school teacher. So getting together for a road trip has become rare over the past several years.

The last time my sister was at DL was our last mother/daughter/sister trip with all my mom’s sisters and nieces back in May of 2004, the month before my dad passed. She has not wanted to go back since because going without my dad has been really hard and she wasn’t feeling up to it.

However, all my talk about the 50th celebration and the fact that my mom has gone too eased the pain for my sister and she asked me if I might be able to squeeze in a weekend while she was on vacation. So, that’s how a trip right smack in the middle of summer for which I never go happen. ;>

Saturday, July 29th, we had a tribal picnic in Gilroy. That’s about an hour southwest of where I live. My mom and I drove down around 8:30am, we had some set up to do, the picnic happened and we scooted out about an hour (3pm) earlier than it was set to end. We had to drive back to Livermore to pick up my sister. She couldn’t go to the picnic, my nephew was in a basketball tournament and she was in charge of some activities with the team. We got back to Livermore around 4:15pm, unloaded picnic stuff, loaded DL gear, picked up my sis and were on the road to DL by 6:15pm. Lots of driving in one day.

There was little to no traffic the entire way. I cruised at 90mph (don’t tell anyone) down HWY 5. Very unusual for my family but we didn't even play music, we talked the whole time. We stopped in Lost Hills for gas and then Valencia for a quick bite to eat at a 7/11. There wasn’t much open food wise and we were starving so we all sacrificed our standards and stomach and had Taco Bell. Blech – man without going into details did we pay for that decision. ;< We rolled into the Candy Cane Inn at 11:15 I believe, 5 hour drive - very good time!

We had some problems at the front desk. I’m thinking the curse of the Desert Inn and Suites has stayed with me. The desk clerk told me my room was cancelled. I asked how when I called at 5pm today to say we’d be a very late arrival and the person on the phone confirmed this. So after my showing my printed reservation via email, showing my ID and standing around for a very long time they realized they had two rooms booked with VERY similar last names both staying on property, they got us mixed up. They were very apologetic so it was all good. We went to park and had another parking lot fiasco, once again another motel with parking issues. SUV's every where in spots too small so I had no where to park. The shuttle driver seen me circling and gave me permission to park where they put the golf carts.

We were given Room 140, which is ALL the way at the end of the left hand side corridor. We were the last room, so our view was the cement wall of building that goes across the Candy Cane property. We had these two huge lights shining down into our room. Being the room has plantation shutters, we could not get the room dark. It was daylight in our room. <sigh>

The last time I stayed at Candy Cane was about five years ago. I always loved this motel but we were not off to a good start this trip. There’s more coming in my report. I’ll just say at this point I will still take BWPPI rooms. Too bad it wasn't BWPPI rooms on Candy Cane Inn's property - THAT would be the best deal in town. However, we came to LOVE the shuttle on Saturday. ;>

We settled in and were sleeping by midnight. We decided we were gonna open the parks - 8am on Sunday!

    Sunday coming up…

I'm with nevadarebel in feeling tired for you. How frustrating that must have been to be told that your reservation had been cancelled >
