    He took a lot of flak for blowing his big line all these years. But decades later, turns out he might have got the line right all along...

    I guess that I am not as articulate as some because I always knew what it meant and never once thought it was incorrect. Man is already singular in it's usage. Men would be the equivalent of Mankind. JMHO.
