The great sound comes from the singers being able to mix their voices with each other. Something that's tough to do when singing through microphones. Same with the strolling Christmas Carolers -- when they try to microphone that group, it just doesn't work as well.

I've heard them singing while I've been on Main Street - but because their voices are coming from the speakers, I don't know where to go to actually see them. I pretty much have to look all over, and it turned out they were at the other end of the street. Without mics, I can judge the direction of their voices, and I also wouldn't be able to hear them until I'm pretty close to them. /cs
