For a variety of reasons, the alcohol culture in the US is quite different than in Europe, so a lot of people really only view it as a means to achieving an end. In general, if our society could learn to deal with alcohol better, a variety of issues would start to solve themselves (drunk driving, for one)

Alcohol is a DRUG, just like the rest of the drugs, and there's no "good" or "bad" way to deal with them, other than to avoid them if driving or operating heavy machinery, and to prosecute rapists who administer them to unsuspecting victims...stuff like that...
