It took a while, but I finally figured it out: CGI tries to look like live action, not like animation. Think about it. The textures, the infinitesimal detail, the lack of squash & stretch, the shading...the goal is to look real. The goal of hand-drawn animation is to feel real, to simulate reality more than imitate it. That's also why, IMHO, 99% of the CGI in hand-drawn movies looks abominably out of place. The Pixar movies are wonderful. But if you love animation, you want to see something that LOOKS animated. At least I do.
