I find a sweatshirt od light jacket is good for the evening. I still get away with shorts in evening, but have worn jeans in at night for extra warmth some nights.

I think the cool-off is a little more gradual here in NorCal. Gloves and jackets are almost always in order at night during the holiday season- esp. for the kiddies.
