But he's right. The writing of Avatar was trash. Beautiful art. Trash writing.

And he's right saying it isn't a beloved franchise. Popular, yes. Beloved, no.

Also, the Harry Potter books have always been planned as a series of books for all the years of Harry at Hogwarts. And the grow up with Harry. The Philosopher's Stone is truly a children's book written for 11 year olds. It is still lovely to read in my opinion and has lots of little quirks and fun side stories, but it is not nearly as ambitious as the later books in the series. That's why the first film might not really appeal to grown-ups either.

I always was slightly disappointed by all of the Harry Potter films (until the last two) because they had to leave out all the detail which made the books so loveable in my opinion, they were so story based. I understand that it was the time constraint of the film that made them cut so much, but I still missed it.

And I think that's the appeal of WoHP as compared to the films: they introduced a lot of those details within the scenery of the films. And because you have time to explore at your own speed, you can really enjoy it, there isn't any story that needs to move along.

So if after 1, you still don't get it, you might want to try 3.

I think the most telling thing is the Halloween costume evidence. My neighborhood has a gazillion kids and Halloween is a big night. I have to buy several bags of candy for 'em.

And I have never seen a blue alien kid show up on my door. I didn't even know what this Avatar movie was about until a few days ago when this news hit, but I would have remembered a blue alien in a loincloth carrying a spear. I've never seen a kid wearing an Avatar t-shirt.

A quick check of Target.com just revealed only 12 items for sale related to Avatar, mostly DVD or blu-ray sets. A search at Target.com using "Disney Cars" turned up 374 items currently for sale at Target; everything from the toys, clothing, sheet sets, bedroom furniture, Halloween costumes, shower curtains, video games, coloring books, birthday party supplies, DVD's and CD's, etc., etc. The search using "Harry Potter" came up with 281 items, skewing to an older child/teen demographic than the Cars merch does.

James Cameron can expect Burbank Suits and WDI Creative Types to be on the set of his second and third sequel daily, and they are likely already weighing in on their thoughts on how he should be framing up the plots for both movies.

They all have a lot of work to do to make sure I've got a few dozen blue aliens on my doorstep by Halloween '15.
