Here's the gist: Bush Derangement Syndrome (the hatred of George W. Bush that blames him for causing 9/11 or being Hitler), irrational though it was, was a response to the choices Bush made or the frustration people felt with his policies. Or as Klein puts it, "Bush Derangement Syndrome sought extraordinary explanations for extraordinary events." This, however, is in sharp contrast to Obama Derangement Syndrome which is largely not a response to Obama's policies, but to Obama the man. Bush never faced accusations of birtherism (to this day, a whopping 66% of Republicans still believe Obama was or could have been born outside the U.S.), for example. Obama's Presidency, says Klein, is thoroughly unremarkable. Which isn't to say he hasn't accomplished anything or that there isn't room for disagreement, but rather, there's nothing in it that is so radical as to justify Obama Derangement Syndrome (say, like a war based on faulty intel). Obamacare is an entirely moderate piece of legislation that, until recently, was embraced by Republicans and instituted by Mitt Romney. There's nothing particularly outlandish about Obama himself or his path to the presidency: Harvard, state senate, U.S. senate, etc. He's a pretty boring family man who likes sports and reading and dislikes having to deal with donors. He waited to support gay marriage until it was politically feasible. Obama is essentially a moderate-to-left-of-center president who has governed as such and passed heavily compromised legislation that is also almost entirely moderate. And yet...something about him causes foaming at the mouth viciousness that, six years in, still has top-level, "serious" Republicans saying he's a traitor, he doesn't love his country, and is otherwise so radical as to defy description or understanding.

What can you say to that? This is not about political gadflies, as was the case with most Democrats laying into Bush. This Obama hating thing is blatant with hatred, ignorance, racism, paranoia and psychosis. But if you think Obama has got them in a stir, if Hillary Clinton is elected as our next President, I guarantee some Republicans will spontaneously combust.
