The monthly losses in jobs are accelerating, wages are stagnant, foreclosures are showing no signs of levelling off, etc. The election in November will be a referendum on the economy and Republicans, in general, are extremely vulnerable to backlash due to the economic policies they have championed during the past 7 years.

The big shoes haven't even dropped yet in the continued meltdown of the housing market and lending crisis. There's also the possibility that a very large bank will fail before year's end, and that is going to scare the daylights out of a lot of ordinary people.
