The early announcement has yet to be confirmed but initial reports come from sources high within the McCain campaign. The stunning announcement comes nearly a full month before the election during a time when the Arizona senator's campaign has suffered a nearly daily barrage of bad news. Poor interview performances on the part of running mate, Sarah Palin, and the onset of one of the worst economic crises in the last century have threatened to unravel the hopes of Republicans seeking four more years in control of the Presidency. Tonight, that threat may have become a reality.

Shortly after leaving the closed meeting where McCain is believed to have revealed his decision to campaign managers a top aide agreed to speak with AP reporters under condition of anonymity. "I just can't believe it. Four weeks is a political eternity and [McCain's] just throwing it all away. I don't understand how you can come this far and then just give up. So many people are believing in this man's vision -- it's just a tremendous letdown." Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin was enroute to a campaign function this evening when news of the announcement broke, but has not yet been able to be reached for comment.

The response from the Republican National Committee, however, has been far less muted. "Concede, my ***!" Chairman Duncan shouted when asked about McCain's rumored announcement. "Under no circumstances does the Republican party concede the election. I assure you there will be a viable Republican candidate on the ballot in November."

In other news, Senator Hillary Clinton has filed paperwork to change her party affiliation. She was seen running from the Capitol this evening laughing hysterically and shouting, "I'm gonna get you yet, baby!"
