Otherwise smart people who are otherwise compassionate, get really weird about their guns. There are, of course, plenty of reasonable gun owners who support increased restrictions. But there are a great many of them that cannot and will not see reason. They have spent so much time convincing themselves that guns are great and everything else is the issue—security, mental illness, anything but the gun.
