Disney is giving Peter Pan a live-action reboot, and the director is rooting for it to be shot here in New Zealand. Director David Lowery is currently on an international press tour for his latest movie Pete's Dragon, but he's already working on his next Disney project, Peter Pan. New Zealand the new Neverland?
Oh thank goodness. I was wondering if anyone was ever going to come up with that idea. I hope they do "A Christmas Carol" next.
A live action Christmas Carol? That's just crazy talk! Scrooge McDuck and Mickey WERE Scrooge and Cratchit (I mean, Mr. McDuck's first name alone - what were the chances?? Born to play the role!), and there's just no need to ever remake that story again.
I'm sooooo over Lowery. But Disney is totally in love with this guy. I don't get it. Seems like an odd marriage to me. And count me amongst the skeptics for yet another we-don't-stinkin'-need-it Peter Pan reboot! You're a bunch of effn cowards, TWDC! Walt put your company on the friggin' map because he dared to be original! He didn't chicken out on his creativity by telling the same story twice! Or three times! Maybe four!! Seriously. Enough with the live action remakes! Try taking a chance on something unique and effn original for a change!
If Pete's Dragon was good enough for a live action remake, it seems like anything is possible Not to beat a dead horse, but I agree that Peter Pan of all stories has been done sooooooo many times that this just doesn't seem necessary in any way. Not that anybody is really clamoring for these live action remakes anyway. Remember about a decade ago when everybody was complaining about the direct-to-video "cheapquels"? This current strategy really doesn't seem like much of an improvement over those; at least the studio was making new stuff in parallel to the cheapquels...
But at least the cheapquels progressed the story beyond the original ending (though I'm not sure we should say too much about the story quality of things like Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time). The current round of stuff adds some depth and a slightly different perspective, but it's all pretty much the same plot points. Yawn...
