In addition to what now seems to be a relatively random collection of pirates pillaging and plundering, there will also be the storyline of Barbossa looking for Jack Sparrow in order to find a secret treasure. One scene specifically mentioned by an Imagineer to get an update is the mayor dunking scene. In this particular scene Barbossa will now be the one directing the dunking of the mayor asking for the whereabouts of Jack Sparrow. Same thing as now, but a little more of story and reason to it now. This will also be the first appearance of a Jack Sparrow animatronic as he lurks in the shadows of that scene.

The updated ride will also feature an apparition of the ghostly Davy Jones, apparently on some type of mist screen. I don't know what his role in the ride will be, but it sounds like an interesting new special effect.

In addition, expect a general clean up of all the scenes, some new/updated lighting and an updated audio system.

Overall, it will be the same ride, same music, hopefully same feel, but with a bit more of a storyline added. If done well, it shouldn't matter if you saw the movie or not and should fulfill the need to update the ride to fulfill expectations of today's current audience and future generations. The characters should just add another layer of storytelling, that's all.
