It has been different amounts in the past. We are staying at the CBR (not sure if hotel makes a difference). Is it determined by you available credit? Also, recently my husband and I decided it was best to close our major charge accounts.....do I need an actual credit card or will my debit card work when presented at the hotel? Thanks in advance!

As for debit cards you have to ask, as many places ( Hertz for example) do not take them because there is not the same guarantee of the funds being available

    Thanks!

Who is your daughter? I am assuming that she is a CM because of your name? It's funny how many people you "know" at the World from these boards. It really is a small world afterall!

You may see her at the front desk checking folks in - she still does that occasionally - or anywhere around Customs House.

I agree. Although you could probably pay for your room in advance with your debit card, I doubt they would allow charge privileges on your room account for just the reason the vbdad mentioned... Disney would have no way of knowing if you would have the necessary funds to cover the charges at checkout.

One thing you might want to try is see if they could charge your debit card $500 or $1,000 (whatever you wanted) for your miscellaneous room charge-backs at the time you check in. If you don't use up the entire amount, you would be refunded when you check out.

One of my brother-in-laws doesn't use credit cards and he did what I suggested above with cash. He gave them an extra $500 at check in to the All Stars so that he could have charge priveledges. My brother-in-law thought it was a great way to go... much easier (and safer) than carrying around a large amount of cash.

You can most defintely use your debit card as long as it has a mastercard or visa logo on it. I do all the time. They don't know how much credit you have available on your card either, do they? (No, they do not pre-approve your amount.) What your brother did is a viable situation.

Wrong. I don't use credit cards - jsut debit, and have never had a problem with Disney allowing me to charge stuff to the room with that on file.

BUT, I freaked out HARD CORE for a few moments at Pop Century last month when Eric & I were checking in and, lo and behold, we were only given a $500 limit! I thought Disney didn't like me, but turns out that's the limit put on cards when you check into the value resorts. Soooo, we just had them charge it off each time we hit $400. :)

As a side note, I've also done the cash thing - both on our honeymoon, then again last year in September. Weird thing was last September - we ended up getting almost $100 back from the front desk on checkout. :)

And, HELLO! I jsut read post #10 after having typed all this, but it's going up anyway to back up what Mark said! lol

I've read that they do. They don't actually run through the charge, but they put a 'hold' on your account in the amount of the anticipated charge.

That's what I've read, but I have no first hand experience. We always use our American Express which has no credit limit but which we also pay the entire balance in 30 days.

this is correct -- if you checked an on line statement for your credit card you would see a hold for that amount -- if the credit card company balks -- they would know the next day.

Some credit cards with the MC or Visa logo ( I have a MC one) - allows a vendor to run the card as either a debit or a credit ( they get their money faster as a debit) - however you are limited by your daily withdrawal allowance.

Hertz will not let you hold/rent a car with them period - regardless of logo on them. I am sure there are others also.

Absolutely not! I have often put my debit card on my account knowing that my direct deposit pay comes later in the week. No problem ... also just checked with my inside source who just booked my December reservations <G> ... no hold is put on your account for charging to your room key. If there is problems it is dealt with when that occurs.

<<... you are limited by your daily withdrawal allowance.>>

If that is true it is a function of an individual bank. I have put many times my daily ATM limit on my debit card (from Citibank) with no problem ... such as charges for my son's wedding.

<<Hertz will not let you hold/rent a car with them period - regardless of logo on them. I am sure there are others also.>>

That is true in some states ... others have laws preventing that.

This would be exactly a true statement - each debit card and bank relationship tends to be very different --reviewing the agreement one signed is the only way to tell for sure what limits are on the card. Many are a function of what other accounts you have at that bank -- my debit is tied to my savings acount so that my checking can never be overdrafted for instance - that changes the money available

as for the hold on an account - maybe it is bank by bank, but I can tell you for a fact that this does occur. If Disney does not do it, maybe that is their policy, but I can also tell you for a fact that some hotels absolutely do this. A hold is just that - a guarantee of funds, not a debit.

preventing them from not taking a debit card ? I had not heard of that,it would be interesting for more details on that as doesn;t the seller have the right to determine the currency they accept ? Many people do not take checks - same thing.
In Illinois they will not take a debit card

I'm not sure if this is true or not. But I'd just throw in that I'm usually charged $1500 on my stays, and I almost always stay at the moderates. Perhaps the values have changed recently.
