The weather was bizarre for this time of year, more like a rainy day in January than mid October, but I watched Disneyland's Halloween Screams fireworks go off on time tonight, signaling that the Halloween party was going well tonight.

Can you imagine if Disneyland closed for the day because of rain showers? Or the cries of horror and anger that would light up the Internets if they outright cancelled a planned Halloween party?

I am continually baffled how Knott's Berry Farm stays in business in the shadow of Disneyland, not just from their pathetically low attendance, but their overall operational decisions.

Although the rain might not make for a fun day at DL it COULD have the added bonus of clearing out the park of all those pesky APers.

Are rainy days common for this time of the year?

I think the annual rainfall in the area is usually about 4-6" (yep, that's all), and the vast majority of that comes between January and March.

Not that fires are a big concern at DL (though the smoke could blow that way), but they should be far higher on your radar of what could go wrong.

What most might not notice is that although it appears you are inside of a building, about 2/3 of the mazes have no ceilings. This makes for a very slippery and unsafe passageway when you are jumping and screaming and trying to sidestep those pesky silly teenagers.

Knott's was very wise to cancel the Haunt last night. Of course, that's only my opinion.

Hate to break it to you Bob Paris 1, but the rain has a tendency to bring AP holders to the Park.

I've noticed that on rainy days the park is actually mostly APers. They don't have to front the ticket price so if they come and play in the puddles for only a few hours it doesn't really affect them the way it would a guest who paid for a one day ticket.

We saw this first hand a few years ago. It began to drizzle late one afternoon. This was sometime in March IIRC. It was supposed to b open until 10PM. By the time it got dark the rain was really coming down hard and it was cold. The park was deserted and only a few attractions were still open. We rode a few until we decided that we were simply miserable and we left around 7 PM. I have no idea the park stayed open until 10PM but I really doubt it. The stores on Main St. were empty. Its the emptiest I have ever seen DL. I would be surprised if there were as many as 1000 people in the whole park when we left.

I know what you mean. Even though it is supposed to be spring here, the east coast of Australia had almost winter conditions again the other day. Melbourne had a max of something like 11 and Hobart was down to an almost freezing SEVEN max, along with wild rains and some flooding.

While you guys are getting el nino, we are apparently getting the el nina or whatever it is - the EAST coast, that is. Here in bloody sub-sahara Perth(so named now because of the weather and the massive influx of African immigrants)it is back to 32 and hot humid conditions.

    *sigh*

Tasmania is looking better and better all the time!

I usually prefer when it DOESNT rain of course, but if its not too heavy I bare it and it can still be fun. But I usually like to sit outside and people watch. When it rains those plans are cancelled ;). But the one time I went during rain at DLR it actually stopped around 3 p.m. so not too bad.

It didn't rain the rest of the evening.

It rains a fair amount a couple days of the year (I would be shocked if it ever got over 1" in a day), but the infrastructure just isn't designed to handle it at all. Most places, outdoor stair treads are sloped 'down' the flight so that water will drain off of them. In soCal, they are built however they feel like, often causing each step to fill up with water in the rain. Sidewalks and roads have large dips in them that fill up with water, and no way to drain them. People plan events (parties, weddings, etc) outside without a rain plan, simply because they know the chances of rain are so low that it doesn't really matter.

In the grand scheme of things, it's just not practical in southern California to plan for rain, since it rains so infrequently (I would be surprised if it's over 20 days per year). It's a huge hassle when it does, and nobody really knows how to handle it (just watch the traffic reports!), but it's just an unfortunate part of the culture.

As a side note, it's always fun when people from soCal plan events elsewhere and don't account for rain. The world premiere of Cars was at the Charlotte Motor Speedway the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, 2006. In true rest-of-the-country fashion, there was quite a big rainstorm in the middle of the afternoon/early evening, and the event crew didn't have any sort of plan. There was nothing listed on the tickets about a rain plan, and they weren't allowing umbrellas inside the gates. Apparently earlier in the day, the storm blew away lots of balloons and tents that had been set up for the event, much to the disappointment of the crews that tried to hold them down in the wind. There are just things that people don't consider in this area, simply because it never occurs to them.
