I just tried it yesterday, and was pleased at how smoothly it went. We'll see how well the return goes this evening.

(For those who don't know, Redbox is a video rental company that operates vending machines at supermarkets. You swipe your credit card and punch a button for the movie you want, and the DVD comes out of the vending slot. The selection is limited, but the locations are convenient and the prices are excellent.)

SGV: The basic price is $1/day. I didn't notice Blue Rays, but then I wasn't looking.

Every Monday you receive a code via your cell so that you can rent a movie for FREE on Mondays.

You can check any Redbox via the net on what is currently in stock, and you can reserve as well.

If you have any problems with something that you rent, you can get in touch with them and they will credit your account.

    LOVE IT!

The best part about it is if I rent the DVD by my house, but are somewhere else when it's due back, it doesn't matter which Redbox machine you take the DVD back to. It also doesn't matter where you rent it, either. Once you have an account you can access rental from any machine.

Actually, if you call the 800# and report the damage you do not get charged for the rental. Also, if it's a holiday and the store is closed, you don't get charged for the extra day.

Schmitty, regarding the rental period, you are charged a dollar a day plus tax, but if for some crazy reason you keep the DVD for 25 days or more, they will charge you $25 plus tax and the DVD is yours to keep.

I've heard of Redbox, but since I don't shop supermarkets, I've never seen it, and would find it a hassle (I'd have to darken the doorstep of a supermarket! :p)

I do love Blockbuster by-mail program, tho they recently made it a lot less appealing in that you have to return your store rental before they'll ship another. But I have unlimited in-store exchanges, which is a great deal. When I'm done with the mailed DVD, or even if I don't feel like watching that one, I go to the store and exchange it for free.

I don't trust the PO which is I don't like any of the by mail programs. And I do LOVE FREE!

If all I want is to use my free rental code every Monday and not rent any other time of the week-I can.

I just offer Blockbuster by mail as an alternative that works better for me. I'm not locked into returning a movie the day after I get it to avoid further charges. And I don't have to worry about the mail - I get the mailed movies 2 days after I return one, without fail. I pay $11.99 per month and virtually always have a movie in the house. If I were more diligent about watching them as soon as I got them, I could watch about 20 movies a month for that price.

I only get one "free" coupon a month, but again it works better for me, since movies can be kept for *at least* a week. Redbox is really counting on those folks (probably the majority) who don't return movies on time. I bet they end up making money on those "free" coupons ;)

I once had a disc so scratched it didn't play. I called the 800 number on the back and they gave me a code to enter in the machine. When I entered that code I returned the scratched DVD (so it would be pulled) and was able to get another DVD of my choice at no extra charge.

I'd left the return till about 8:45, so I had 15 minutes to find another Redbox location if I didn't want to be charged another buck. Fortunately, there was another one in the same shopping center, and I made the deadline with a few minutes to spare.

I don't think I'll use Redbox very often, mostly because the selection is limited to current movies only, but it's nice to know about. (I get most of my videos from the public library, which has the opposite problem of having lots of older titles and few current ones.)

I finally got a Netflix account a couple of months ago, too, and I've really been loving that. It took me a while to get around to it, but I'm so glad I did!
