Its doubtful that these rules are enforced 100% when the chips are not in use, but that doesn't mean the rules are not there.

Mugs in years past may have been sold under different terms or perhaps undefined terms, and there are many opinions about this when it comes to those terms being different than the current ones if you still have an old mug.

Word has it that when they have the chip in operation, it enforces the two rules above, as well as a time limit, such as not allowing multiple fills within a 5 or 10 minute window. This is to prevent you from buying one mug for the whole family, then filling the single "unlimited refills" mug, dumping it into another glass for another family member, then immediately refilling it again. The 5- or 10-minute rule is not going to impact anyone using the mugs in a legitimate way.

So as of right now you get free refills for the duration of your visit and only at the resort you purchased it at.

On another note, my family purchased refillable mugs back in 1998 and were told that they would be unlimited refills for the life of the mug. It is over 10 years later and we still bring them with and refill them. Even though they arent even the same design or shape of the current mugs. I don't believe we have ever had any cast members tell us we couldn't use them.

At some point in time, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see "refillable mugs" under the heading of "Are no longer available". Depends a lot on the integrity of guests.

Small places with very little usage, OK, but it would make no sense at all to just give away their product. And we are talking about a lot of product here.

It is also not uncommon for vendors to pay very little for the actual syrup, but the cups cost $$. This is the case at our Little League's snack bar where volunteers are told they can have as much soda as they want, but not to use the name brand cups because they were the item that cost the snack bar money.
