Here's a better one that I think is impossible to rebut: Where were all the concerns about deficit spending, spiraling national debt, and "passing the costs on to our grandchildren" back in 2004 when Medicare D was passed? For those that don't remember, Medicare D is the prescription drugs for seniors program that was added to Medicare, which previously lacked a prescription drug benefit. Here are some of the aspects of Medicare D: - Universal eligibility for those enrolled in Medicare - The 10-year cost of this program is currently estimated at $400 billion - The program was COMPLETELY unfunded. That is, when it was passed, it was just another $400 billion out of the general fund to be added to the national debt - It's the largest social welfare entitlement to be added in the US in the last 40 years How does the above square with the Republicans' current stance on health care reform? It doesn't. Why was there no squawking at the time?

Republicans can push through the most insanely conservative stuff and rarely worry about losing an election over it. Democrats so much as think about being too liberal in some places and they will get hammered from all sides. Right now a moderate Utah Republican is fighting for his political life because he applauded the President denouncing "death panels." That's how crazy this country can be.
