Between LP, Facebook and the usual weekend phone calls with family and friends, we managed to poll 100 people within 27 hours. Pretty amazing this technology stuff. Mikey was hoping for 100 people in the poll (we hit it, thank you everyone - we said he was being over optimistic, but bless him, he nailed it). He wanted to know how many people had a pet, and he wanted to know how many had dogs. We was only allowed to ask one question, so he was the one that suggested we ask an open question. It was really interesting stuff. WE had the 100 answers from England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Italy, Dubai, Japan, the US and Canada. These were the findings: Of the 100 people asked, 20 (or 20%) did not have a pet. So he was right, more people have pets than not. Of the 100 people, the pets were popular in this order: 81 dogs 76 cats 43 birds (this includes chickens and ducks) 34 rodents (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, and degu) 21 fish collections (not everyone posted how many, so for ease we counted frequency) 19 Reptiles (snakes, lizards, turtles and frogs) 9 other (this includes ponies, horses, insects and crustaceans) So there are 283 pets out of the 100 people = 2.83 pets per person. If you just consider the 80 people who have pets, that means the ratio increases to 3.54 pets per pet owner. We produced a bar chart and pie chart to show pet owning households vs. none, and then a bar chart and pie chart to show the different pets in popularity. Again, his hypothesis was correct in that the dog is statistically the most popular pet of the people asked. We then talked about other breakdowns we could do, such as popularity by country or county, or age (though the data is missing) or gender. He is only 6, so we didn't want to take it to far. Thanks for your help folks, I'm quite proud of my little social scientist. Though daddy did the data entry, Mikey managed the methodology and manually tallied the results (I showed him validation using excel, which he thought was cool, but we would only do this after he did it manually). Mike is struggling in school, but he really enjoyed this. And where he had not heard of an animal before, both he and his sister enjoyed googling to learn about them (these were Degu and Hermit Crabs that he was uncertain of). Thank you again folks. It is very much appreciated.

Hopefully Mike will continue to find stuff here and there that he can enjoy taking part in and learning about, that's the best way to get excited about school imho...
