HOWEVER, a few hours before park closing (8 or 9 P.M. or so), they stop staffing all the parking booths, and you can then park in Timon for free, (while it still exists). The advantage? You can walk to the Main Entrance Plaza (formerly the Esplanade) by using this pathway that runs parallel w/ Harbor Blvd. Sometimes, in the evening, I'll go into the park(s) just to catch fireworks, or a few last rides, and I don't have to worry about reaching into my wallet for my AP, waiting for the shuttle, etc. I have a little more control/freedom.

I can't imagine they will still need a tram area for the Timon lot now that this part of the parking lot is going to shrink down to hardly anything. Plus a new section of retail and landscaping to match the other side of DTD would give a MUCH nicer entrance to the DL Resort from Harbor. Right now its a concrete jungle of taxis, trams and a multi colored lamp posts.

They don't usually have as many trams running as M&F, so there can be long waits for one to show up, and they sit there for quite a while to make sure they get filled up. After trying that a couple times, I did a little experiment and realized that it would be faster to walk at a moderate pace than it would be to wait any length of time to get on a tram. If the tram was already there, it would be about the same length for both. And with all the safety announcements they make on the trams these days, it often makes me wonder how on earth they ever managed to do trams with many stops that didn't take hours to complete each trip through the old parking lot. Have my memories faded, or weren't the old trams much quicker to load and unload at each point?

But, I have noticed with the continued success of the convention center - those words aren't uttered as much anymore. Disney could buy some of the land on the other side of the 5 Freeway where it isn't as nice for the resident or tourist and design a structure with a brief elevated tramway to connect the guest to the park.
