Barack Obama's foes seized Sunday upon a brief slip of the tongue, when the Democratic presidential nominee was outlining his Christianity but accidentally said, "my Muslim faith." The three words -- immediately corrected -- were during an exchange with ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "This Week," when he was trying to criticize the quiet smear campaign suggesting he is a Muslim. But illustrating the difficulty of preventing false rumors about his faith from spreading, anti-Obama groups within one hour of the interview had sliced it out of context and were sending it around via email. They also were blogging about it. Mr. Obama, who is a Christian and often proudly speaks about how his faith has influenced his public service, said he finds it "deeply offensive" that there are efforts "coming out of the Republican camp to suggest that perhaps I'm not who I say I am when it comes to my faith." << OK, so he mispsoke, but there have been a lot of McCain/Palin religious "hate threads here at LP. Senator Obama is clearly a Christian, and there is serious issues with his former pastor, Rev. Wright, and Senator Biden is a Catholic. Why can the Liberals call out the belives of the Republicans and ignore the Democrats???

Why can the Liberals call out the belives of the Republicans and ignore the Democrats???" How is this compareable? Obama is not Muslim, and it's a slip of the tounge, so what's to criticize? I could see how this might relate if McCain or Palin said they were one faith, but really another. Still, this doesn't make sense comparing this slip-up to the attacks on Palin. She's not shy about what she believes. At least Obama distanced himself from Rev. Wright. We have yet to hear Palin denounce her church's teachings...

It's a tactic that they've been employing for about a year now, right up to this very day. Obviously anybody who's paying the least bit of attention knows it's not true. The only people who would respond to this "scare tactic" are the dumbest clucks out there - and that's where the GOP aims - trying to sway the most gullible stupid americans. Is this campaigning with honor and integrity? Of course not - the republicans NEVER DO. They ALWAYS go for the politics of destruction - smearing their opponents with lies and innuendos and whispering campaigns. Anyone who's been through the last few election cycles can hardly refute this. And it's doubly ironic that these are the same folks who will proudly wear their morality and values on their sleeve, and congratulate each other on what "great americans" they are.

If a Muslim-American actually runs for the presidency someday. Can you imagine the backlash? Or what about someone who is incredibly competent, but happens to be agnostic or atheist. People would come unglued. Many Amricans talk a good game about how wonderful it is that people of all faiths come here. But when it comes to elected officials, it's a very narrow spectrum that is actually acceptable.

BTW, I had such a strong feeling of déjà vu reading that--did you make that same strong point here months ago, K2?
