That not saying Mary Poppins isn't a great film. It's always great to see Gus get mentioned. It's my ultimate guilty pleasure movie. Give me Gus over any so called Oscar worthy film any day.

I remember being terribly disappointed in that sequel to my (at the time) favorite movie ever. And that was at age 12! I shudder to think how bad it'll be watching it now. Not that that'll stop me.

I've always loved Apple Cumpling Gang. I find it genuinely warm & funny, not only the classic fire house scene you mention, but the wonderful fight in the saloon, too.

Question: these 3 DVDs are widescreen, right?

I find it sad how people's tastes change so drastically that they go from loving a film to thinking they're terrible. I have to say there are very few things I loved as a child that I would say is terrible now. Sure certain things don't appeal to me as much, but I can understand why I enjoyed it.

    Nice job, Kirby.

Keep in mind I review the DVD as a whole, not just the film. The film itself would probably garner at least a D- ... maybe even an F!

    >Also don't forget that Bedknobs and Broomsticks was released in the early 70's<

I didn't forget, but for the purpose of the article I was focusing strictly on all live action fare. For the record, "Bedknobs" is one of my favorites, if only for the cool final battle.

    >I'm not an APPLE DUMPLING kind of guy.<

LOL ... that has made me giggle all day ...

Can't agree there. The ability to discriminate between quality entertainment and garbage is learned. I'm sure most kids my age, like me, sat glued to the TV every Saturday morning watching the latest swill from Hanna Barbera and Filmation, and enjoyed it very much. Now I can't be in the same room with it. It's certainly not a sad thing--it's that I now know better.

I was NOT a very discriminating viewer at age 12. The fact that I intensely disliked "Return from Witch Mountain" indicates that it must've really stunk.

I remember Anchor Bay talking about it in a press release long ago (when they first announced the release of "Watcher in the Woods"--only to have it delayed 2 years from announcement". "Midnight Madness" wasn't a good movie, but one of those movies played on Showtime OVER and OVER and OVER again--between "The Pirate Movie" and "Playboy After Dark" in the early '80's.

Disney's first PG release was a little-seen movie called "TAKEDOWN" - a wrestling film. January of 1979.

MIDNIGHT MADNESS came a little over a year later. it was a little higher profile.

And in between came a little movie called THE BLACK HOLE. Also PG, for Ernest Borgnine cussing over his sprained ankle.
