The Kanji characters "Mai" and "hama" mean "dancers beach", by the way.

"Since its opening, Tokyo DisneySea has quickly become popular with visitors from all over the world, and has evolved into the representative icon of the Chiba Bay Area. The Tokyo Disney Resort area is known as Maihama ("The Dancing Beach"), in homage to Florida Disney World's nearby Miami Beach. The name 'Maihama' was created from a whimsical Japanese translation/pun of Miami Beach; the first character, mai (meaning "dance") is pronounced similarly to the first syllable of "Miami", while hama is the Japanese word for "beach"."

I like the Anaheim explanation better, just because it ties TDR to DLR(the Original)! :p

But I have to agree the words are too similar for it to be a coincidence. And knowing the way WDI used to operate, in my view, makes it even more unlikely.

I mean, “Dancing Beach?†What kind of sense does that make?

If you are familiar with 'japanesed english' you would see it makes perfect sence... Take japanese and translate it into engligh and it makes no sense whatsoever... "ket's Kiosk", "Shop and Life" etc etc are some examples of japanesed english.

THANK GOD FOR THAT!! The other 2 resorts are way too screwed up and can't run their own places!!

Some of the place names in Tokyo are pretty "out there", if you translate them literally, but really it's just about picking some kanji characters and how the place sounds more than literal translations.

A TDR cast member friend told me that it makes perfect sense though, since there are so many dancers at TDR. :p

    Good to hear it!! :p

I've heard the Anaheim thing before, but everyone I've asked at WDAJ/OLC has always said that it was a coincidence only.
