My boss brought his TV to work and we all watched, breathless. before that it was always nosecones bobbing in the ocean. We couldn't believe a ship could go into space and land back on earth like an airplane! I teach in a little town not far from NASA-Ames. We took our students out to see the flight and got a pretty good view.

At Disneyland the shuttle flew over both parks in early afternoon, and they had PA announcements prior to the flyover with the parks packed with people assembled in common areas all cheering and hollering. It seems NASA could have timed this better for the Florida departure, at least as far as WDW's impact was concerned.
