That is why Disney is such a "BIG" hypocrite!

But the company knew that people would not be upset by the stereotyping in films like Bringing Down the House. So they released it, and they were right - nobody blinked.

So maybe the people who are the REAL hypocrites are the people who have been bullying Disney to keep SotS in the vault for 25 years, while not worrying about other films.

Iger is no hypocrite. He's a business man.

I don't think that is a completely accurate way of characterizing Iger's comments either. What he specifically noted was that he feared people would not look at the film in the correct historical context. He never said that the film wasn't offensive or that those who objected to it were wrong.

I absolutely believe that the film should be available. In fact, I own the Japanese laserdisc myself and am very glad that the film is, thus, available to me and to my family. I just don't think it is helpful to the cause of getting the film to be released to pretend that the problems with the film don't exist or are primarily the result of an overreaction.

The film has some very positive messages, some great animation and songs, and a very warm and winning central performance by James Baskett as Uncle Remus. These assets are ones that I definitely do not think should be lost.

Unfortunately, the film is also full of stereotypes and sanitized depictions that greatly misrepresent the nature of race relations during that period of our nation's history. The film was made during a time before the civil rights movement really took hold and is very reflective of the attitudes of that era. Iger's key point was that he feared that context would be overlooked.

In many ways, I think with this film Disney is kind of a victim of their own success when it comes to the creation of a timeless quality to their films. When a classic Disney film is reissued, they tend to generate interest that is more typical of new releases than of catalog titles from other companies. I'm not entirely sure that "Song of the South" would play the same way (even without the racial overtones, the film feels more dated than other Disney films of that era), but I can understand why Disney would be more concerned about the reactions to a reissue of this film than other studios are about other films with similar issues.

Interesting pov, for sure. 'Gone with the Wind' has some interesting perspectives of the Civil War -- certainly sanitized.

So do many of the early 'Charlie Chan' movies.

If presented properly, Disney could certainly release 'Song of the South.'

But, heck, I thought they chickened out by not having Uncle Remus as a character in 'Splash Mountain' but that's just me.
