I could see that coming through sometimes and wished he had better control of the way his writing came across. I was never sure if the nastiness was accidental or intended.

Daannzzz, I suspect a little of both. I don't think it was intended most of the time but if someone was pushing his buttons he could come on a *little* strong. I spoke rather harshly to him once when he upset someone close to me with something he said about her. I fully expected to get reamed but he surprised me with a heartfelt apology. That was my first glimpse of jon's other side...it wasn't the last.

    Good luck with that Beau!

    LOL

But even though both posters had their good points, I think they went over the edge so often that the mods had to make the decisions they did.

me too, but it was actually DOGWITKEYS. I still love that screen name.

I noticed a big change in jon right after Mr X's "The "nice things about jonvn" thread..."

    <a href="http://mb.laughingplace.com/MsgBoard-T-94072-P-1.asp?C=1" target="_blank">http://mb.laughingplace.com/Ms....asp?C=1</a>

Even though it might have started out as a tongue in cheek joke, I think jon was touched to find out that quite a few of us really liked him and his manner of posting reflected it. For a while we seemed to see a kinder, gentler jonvn. One LP'er stated it really well. Sometimes he could be a troll...but he was *our* troll.

That is a fair enough point, dan. I found some of his rants made him sound like a crotchety old man. Most of the time, I think I just stopped talking to him when he got like that.

I don't think he was banned, either. I think Doobie asked him to stop posting but it seemed like there was more going on than we were privy to.

More to the point, his involvement in any controversial thread usually put an end to any sensible conversation continuing.

<<< You don't get into WE much, do you? ;-) >>>

In WE, even though there often is contentious debate and widely differing of opinions, usually an actual conversation and exchange of ideas goes on (in addition to bickering and lot of other things). The thing is, when jonvn would jump in, the style of his participation would almost immediately end the discussion and turn it into a war. And, individual posters simply choosing to ignore him didn't stop it.

I remember on several occasions starting a thread or participating in one where I was genuinely interested in discussing the topic at hand, and actively hoping that jonvn didn't stumble into the thread. This wasn't because I agreed or disagreed with him, but that the conversation would effectively end at that point. There was one other poster (perhaps not coincidentally, also banned) that had the ability to do this. With everyone else, even if things devolve into a bit of name-calling and shouting, there's still a conversation and discussion of the underlying issue occurring.

He was banned. And came up with a new handle to discuss his banning, and was banned under that too.

I prefer that he not be welcomed back to Lybia.

I think that tells you a lot right there. Among other things, Jon was one to come up with his own definition of words and terms when it suited his position, and not disclose that he's doing so, and carry on the conversation as if this weren't the case (not that he's the only one to do this - there are still some left in WE that do the same thing).

If Doobie says that he fully explained it to Jon, then that's good enough for me. Doobie is well spoken enough to explain what he means in an understandable way, and Jon is smart enough to see what someone else is saying even if he doesn't agree with it. At least, when he chooses to do so.
