They also added some new effects on the lift hills and new music, but there's no way to check for those things on WDW's until it opens. Considering the amount of work that was done in DL, the change for the average guest was minimal (though the ride was significantly smoother when it reopened). I expect that the changes in WDW be along the same vein.

They repainted the space station thing in the load area silver. To me, those are fairly minor pieces of the overall attraction experience. If they had enclosed the part of the queue before the FP merge point, or made what's there have a bit more of a story instead of a futuristic hallway, I would consider it to have more of an impact of the rest of the ride. Indiana Jones starts in the queue. For me, Space Mountian starts when you get on the ride. Yes, the indoor part of the queue is nice to look at, but it doesn't really tell me much about the story behind the ride (other than "a thrilling, high speed, roller coaster-type adventure in the dark, with sudden drops and stops"), if there even is one. I would say that WDW's old queue is at least as good as the new one in DL, if not better. It doesn't add to a story, but it does give us a setting of futuristic/outer space. If the queue was used to tell more of a story (or any story for that matter), then I would consider it to be a more important part of the experience. But for how long the attraction was closed and how much they spent on the redo, the average guest wouldn't notice much of a difference. The holiday overlays for it's a small world and Haunted Mansion make more changes in only 2 weeks. Structurally there's a huge difference in what's there now. Operationally, I think the new coaster probably works a lot easier than the old one. To the average guest, they have no idea that any of that happened. Considering all that was done, they see very few differences between the new and the old.

I know I prefer the latter.

You can't rewrite Shakespeare, otherwise it wouldn't be Shakespeare.

We suppose you could blame the bad economy for this.

It was decided to close the attraction suddenly. All the other makeover stuff was an afterthought. There was no solid plan to close down Space Mountain and upgrade it prior to the discovery that the track had to be replaced.
