-In 18 months, Apple has sold over 3 BILLION apps. 3,000,000,000.

-There are now 284 Apple Retail Stores and growing.

-Steve claims that Apple is now a mobile device company. They sell three product lines... the iPhone, the iPod, and the Mac (vast majority of Macs are notebook/laptops)

-Since 1976, 34 years in business of innovation.

-In 2010 ALONE Apple had $15.6 Billion in revenues. 15,600,000,000.00

-Today Apple is the largest mobile device company in the world, out selling Sony's mobile division (including camcorders, phones, etc...) Samsung, and even Nokia.

-Hate Apple if you like, but the margin will only grow, because no one else innovates the way Apple does. The big secret is that the devices just work on a simple "anyone can use it" intuitive level.

Congratz Steve and Co. The iPad looks awesome and who knows what's in development now for the future. I hope they invent something like iRobot that will do my housework.

    Thoughts? Anyone?

I'm going to hold off on the iPad for now until they make a few improvements. But I love my Mac and my iPod is definitely one of my favorite gifts over the past few years. And that includes a new 1080p hi def tv I received this year and a trip to Florida and Mexico.

First of all, his claim that they are the "largest mobile device company" may be true, but it is pretty heavily dependent on the iPod, a product line that peaked a couple years ago and is now in decline as mobile phones increasingly double as music players.

While the iPhone is obviously a huge hit, Apple's market share for cell phones is still way below Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Sony Ericson, and even RIM (Blackberry). Apple is also facing an increasingly competitive marketplace where newer operating systems (particularly Android and Palm WebOS) have pretty seriously diminished Apple's big user-interface advantage.

They do still have a big competitive advantage when it comes to the number of applications available for the iPhone (and now the iPad), although Android is growing so fast that it could be a close race by the end of this year. One big correction to the first post in this thread, though, is that they have not SOLD 3 billion apps. Instead, there have been 3 billion downloads. A very large percentage of those were free applications. The apps store is likely very lucrative (at least for Apple), but it is unclear how much money it really does bring in.

Finally, Jobs did lump the Mac laptop sales into his overall "largest mobile company" speech, but Apple's overall worldwide market share for PCs still hovers around 5% (about 8% in the US). Even among individual manufacturers, they lag behind HP, Dell, and Acer. In the computer business, they profitable, but really a niche product, although one with an extremely loyal audience.

Of course, they aren't infallible either. Apple TV has pretty much been a flop for them. The iPad generated decidedly mixed reactions yesterday (even among Apple's fans), so it is safe to say that the jury is still very much out on whether or not it is going to end up as a success or not as well.

I love my new phone (got it for my birthday in November). Love it. Love to tell people how much I love it. No way am I going to argue with people about how my phone is better than theirs. Who cares?
