How much does it cost to press a penny? What kind of pennies work best? Is there any "special edition" machines out that would really be cool to hit up? I found the Pressed Pennies Website, so I can give them a checklist, but other than that, I'm kinda clueless.

Before that year, they were real copper, as opposed to the alloy they are now. I'll see if I can find it. You can really see the difference in how they age over time. It might be on that page.

In my opinion the latest ones are not as nice as the ones from the last few years. The 51 pennies from the 50th celebration were really neat.

If you layer 1 penny and 2 quarters and continue that throughout the container, you can just take out exactly what you need to press a penny. The coins fit nicely in the container too. My DS loves to make the pressed pennies and we read about this neat tip and plan to do it when we visit the park again.

So difficult for me, the penny collector to willingly let my husband and son press them... As long as they stay away from my official penny book and out of my steelies, I don't care!

All it costs is a bit of electricity and whatever it costs to set up the die in the first place. Not a bad money-making scheme!

As it is, I think it's a great type of collection, especially for a kid. The anticipation of saving up and washing the pennies before a trip is fun, and my kids look through their albums and trade them and plan which ones they want to get next. Harmless, pretty cheap fun. Of course, they'll probably start collecting pins later. *sigh*

Much to my delite a year later they were fixed and we finshed out the set. Did they removed the 50th dies and add something different? So excited for our trip this summer.

The worst were not all clean but did look substantially better and the best looked like they could have been minted a few days ago. If you're cleaning zinc pennies do not use this method because if there is any scratch through the copper cladding the vinegar will dissolve the zinc core. Its kinda cool, actually, to see the empty penny shell! And Thank You to everybody with tips! My son and husband will have tons of fun.
