In China, if there is only one language announced, I assume it's Mandarin? And in Hong Kong, Cantonese? Or is one more "universal than the other?

I'm still curious about how very separate these languages are, are there some similariries or similar words? I believe the writting system is quite similar.

Oh well, if noone knows, I might do a lil research on it myself out of curiousity.

I think Cantonese is pretty much limited to the Canton area of China, with Hong Kong being at the tip. I don't know how far it extends into mainland China, but I would guess that Guangdong Province is mostly Cantonese-speaking (which includes Shenzhen right across the border from HK, and the provincial captial city of Guangzhou). I think that outside of that immediate area, the only people that speak Cantonese are those that immigrated from that area and now live elsewhere.

Over out in Guangdong Province its mainly 50/50 Cantonese/Mandarin speaking but you see 50/50 Traditional/Simplified writing. Elsewhere in mainland China its all simplified writing and mandarin speaking.
