The current Doctor, and current companions have only been around since last season. The old show runner handed it off to a new person, and so there was definitely a change in tone. So starting with last season (Season 5) is a good place to start.

The only thing is that there is a character who is introduced in the 8th episode of Season 4, who is important in this section of the show. If you have the time, you can start with the 2005 reboot, with Christopher Eccleston, then through the David Tennet episodes and then onto the current one. I love the David Tennet episodes, but then you might want to know more about Rose, and she was introduced in the 1st episode of the reboot, and that's only adding on one more year, so you might as well watch from the beginning. But you could probably start with Season 5 and catch up. Then go back to the beginning of the reboot and watch Seasons 1-4.

Yeah, you should. It's good stuff.

Better to start from the beginning (of the reboot, anyway). Hard to jump in, too much going on. If possible, I'd go back to the beginning if I were you. In my case, for some strange reason I just HAPPENED to catch it way over in Japan right at the beginning of the reboot (as you put it), and it's been pretty freakin awesome though I'm still working my way through my bad vibes on the new Doc (the past two were awesome...I'm probably one of the few that really liked the first "re-booted" incarnation as much or more compared to the second...the first (10th?) had a certain dry confidence I thought was pretty cool).

    Anyway, Doctor Who rocks!

I don't think any television show in the past 20 years has affected me as much as the final "Rose" show. I was just a blubbering mess on my couch - so poignant, so terribly sad!!!

I have last night's show plus the look at last season recorded on my DVR, and hope to get to them both today.

Also David Tennat replaced Tom Baker for me as my favorite Doctor

yesterday's part one was great but man do I have questions, and concerns

1/ WHo is River exactly ? If she turns out to be ex wife I think Steve Moffat has screwed up- as continuity issues with many class ic episdoes if he was 'married' - And does any Who fan really want that ? Torchwood is there for episodes going that direction- thought the screamer comment out of context for Who- not for Torchwood, but for Who- just IMHO
2/ Is the Doc really set up to - die - die at age 1107 now ?
3/ It is obvious Amy will be leaving as a companion ( pregnant )- who's next companion- looking for rumors

It is also obvious they are pushing hard to increase audience in US-- I really hope they don't do much out of the ordinary for that- as most Who fans here like it written how should I put this, more intelligently than US TV shows.

My current theory...Amy & Rory's daughter (or descendant) and either the girl on the telephone, the person in the spacesuit (or both).

    > If she turns out to be ex wife I think Steve Moffat has screwed up- as continuity issues with many class ic episdoes if he was 'married' - And does any Who fan really want that ? <

Well, in his timeline the marriage wouldn't have happened yet, if there is one. Since they are living in reverse order, River has already lived the "marriage. But it's the 1100ish year old Doctor married to her, not the 900 year old one. Time travel is so confusing. :) And since it seems like it's setting up that River is in prison for murdering the Doctor, I hope there is an unseen twist.

As for Matt Smith...I still don't know. He can play the childlike, there is a cornucopia of people and experiences around the bend. But David Tennant played the haunted man who has seen and done too much, so well, that sometimes this Doctor seems rather 1-dimensional.

And Labuda, Torchwood returns July 8th and it will be shown on the US on Starz.

oh so agree-- the 'dark side' of the Doctor is there so vividly with David...but not overwhelming, you get glimpes of a tortured soul however
