This is all fantasy or one fantasy overlapping another, if you will. Sorry, but I'm not buying into this crap about how lame everything is and how they have desecrated the Haunted Mansion. Just ain't so!

Oh yea and Michael Sprout brought you the erudite-ness that was the SSE Script and ending. SO MUCH TALENT on the East Coast!

With all the nostalgia dished up this weekend, the one thing that sits with me is that mostly everything that use to be designed and installed at WDW had a warmth about it. Even when the intended result was to be cool or stark, there was an underlying comfort to everything that was implemented. There was a charm to it all. Recent attempts, even at reimagineering or modernization, comes off as very cold, very generic. Kind of like what was occurring with Disneyland when it was run by a bunch of retailers. This graveyard is a perfect example. The old one was a nice diversion, a nice gag. While it was intended to be a graveyard, the tongue in cheek nature of it, offered a warmth, or a self-effacing wink to the guest. It carried out its purpose for what it was, and I think delivered on both a a very quick and causal level, as well as on an intense geek-dom level if one was aware of the connections to the inside graveyard show scene and its designers. My complaint/observation is not tied into past concerns raised, like the shifting of the "story" or the cartoonish nature of the addition. It is more that the overall design comes off as cold. As if a toy company designed something that could be purchased and collected in pieces on a Toys R Us aisle. The design tries too hard, especially in relation to what it replaced, and in doing so comes off as superficial and not rooted in the overall charm of the park. (or what's left of the charm of the park) So, I guess that is my beef with a lot of these additions. They are either cheap and not well thought out like the Pooh queue, they are cold and out of tone like the SM and HM queues, or they simply clash with the authentic charm of the park. Now before someone says that I am just not wanting things I liked change, here is one more case. Hopefully I am wrong. Goofy's Barnstormer. I never really cared for this addition. I thought its installation violated the design rules the park itself setup for itself. Maintenance shed in clear public view, steel and footers exposed, etc. However, I would not have ever denied that the designers did justice to Goofy, and the weak attempt at a Toontown. That while it was functionally misplaced, the queue and station had a lot of inherit warmth to it. The chickens activating upon the coaster's entry into the barn, the ceiling fans in the station, and on and on. These elements belonged in a toontown and they certainly were a step up from the typical Vekoma installation. I didn't like it, but even so, I would never be able to argue that the experience was "cold" to families of guests. The reason I bring this up is because I try to keep my own opinions away from what I believe to be good and bad at MK. I didn't like Barnstormer, but it there were things present with it that were harmonious to the MK. My worry, like the HM graveyard, is that the current screwballs at WDI can no longer deliver warmth, the can no longer deliver charm, so something I didn't even like in the past might be made worse. We shall see, but something tells me, based on recent efforts, that the Goofini installation will be a little more cold, a little more rigid, a little less successful in how it interacts with the rest of the MK. The style coming out of these folks just does not seem to be harmonious with the style that originated from the early WED designers.

The look from the riverboat and/or TSI was far more realistic of a mansion on the hill without it. Sometimes less is more.
