I can understand how a certain little scene in "The Little Mermaid" would be objectionable (and thus, edited out of my Mermaid DVD), but those who never knew about it won't miss what isn't there now. But those clouds are a big effect in "The Lion King" and certainly something to miss when unsubtly removed. And why?
Originally Posted By FerretAfros I thought that the infamous SFX cloud was at another point in the move, where Simba was standing on a cliff, and laid down, causing some dust to float up in the air; as the wind blew it to Rafiki, it supposedly spelled it out. I've never actually been able to make out any letters at either location, so I don't really know. As for the least subtle edit, Belella, you should check out the Pastoal Symphony in Fantasia, where they not-so-carefully edited out the black centaurette by zooming way in on the other ones, causing the film to get extremely grainy for a couple seconds. Or Make Mine Music, where they cut an entire segment from the DVD release. Or countless other changes through the years. Heck, Disney's done their best to edit all of Song of the South out of the public's memory, despite it being the basis for a major attraction in both US resorts. At least they were able to digitally remove the clouds in this one (for whatever reason they were removed), so they didn't have to crop the image or cut the scene's length.

I know about the edits in "Fantasia", "Make Mine Music" and "Melody Time", but I feel they were justified. Especially the infamous "Martins and the Coys." But I see no reason to edit out the clouds in "Lion King" just because some viewers "thought" they saw something. Same thing in the cartoon "Clock Cleaners." Donald shouts "Says you!" not what some others may think. As a result, I am unable to find a complete version of the original cartoon. "Song of the South." A film that needs to be seen to be understood, although I understand the controversy somewhat.
