    >>A tourist from Colorado has drowned at a Walt Disney World resort.

Nancy Heizer, 58, of Colorado Springs, was pronounced dead Thursday night after another guest noticed her floating motionless in a swimming pool at the Coronado Springs Resort, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

Guests, including a registered nurse from Maine, tried to resuscitate the victim. Cathryn Paolucci, the nurse, used an Automated External Defibrillator provided by Disney employees but was unable to restart the woman's heart, records show.

Heizer arrived Sunday for a weeklong stay to attend a conference of the U.S. Figure Skating Association, records show. Heizer worked for the skating association.<<

Anyways, that is sad. Was there no lifeguard on duty at that time? I wonder what the hours were.

Coachbag...that IS the whole article. I am surprised it happened on Thursday night and was just mentioned now!

My guess is that there wasn't, but it sounds like rather than a simple drowining caused by a lack of being able to swim that something, like a stroke or a heart attack, may have occurred while the Guest was in the water. Completely conjecture on my part, but in my mind it would more clearly explain the death of a grown woman in a pool. It's a horrible circumstance and my thoughts go out to her family.

My condolences to the family of the deceased. I do have a feeling, though, that imadisneygal may be correct...

On a sarcastic note, I suppose they are going to make the pools more shallow now? And, slow down Mission: Space for good measure. Perhaps she rode that attraction earlier in the day?

FWIW, a defibrillator cannot "restart" a heart that is no longer beating. Defibs are used to restart a "runaway" heart. There are various heart arrythmias when the heart (due to a lack of oxygen) starts beating faster and faster, until it becomes innefeective and pulse ceases (but the heart continues to beat, as fast as 200+ beats per minute). The defib stuns the heart and stops it. What is then expected (or hoped) is that the heart will resume beating at a normal rate (with a standard sinus wave).

Anyway, since the woman had drowned it is likely that her heart had already stopped by the time she was found. Automatic External Defibs (AED's) measure the patients ECG (EKG) and depending on the wave (or lack of) a shock may or may not be administered (automatically).

It's slow to begin with but that's the public for you.

What happens at the World is not related to what happens at WDW. Just because the World is a crummy place to be, doesn't mean that WDW has followed siut and sunk to new lows... Although some people are bringing their bad habits and behavious into WDW, which concerns me and impacts the feel of the resort.

Pick me out a town of 200,000 + anywhere in the country and show me where a day goes by where people don't die. now I agree, it truly is sad to di on vacation....and it makes great press clippings....but take any town/city that size in America and show me a lower crime rate, and I'll move there tomorrow.

Comments like this come from all these press stories, even though it almost always turns out to be a hidden health issue, or peopl expire from old age, or a diabetic reaction etc...it's not like once one enters WDW they are immune to life....it truly does goes on.
