So, unrequited love songs. I wonder if we could all come to a consensus here on the number ONE sad song about love, which would be "Yesterday" by the Beatles? Maybe I'm wrong, but that one strikes me as number one for all time.

In the battle for second place though, my vote goes to "On My Own", from Les Miserables...

"I love him..but only on my own"

    *sniff*

    Thoughts?

For me "Fallin" by Alicia Keys is pretty up there:

    Sometimes I love ya
    Sometimes you make me blue
    Sometimes I feel good
    At times I feel used
    Lovin' you, darlin'
    Makes me so confused

    I keep on fallin'
    In and out
    Of love
    With you
    I never loved someone
    The way that I
    Love you

    Oh, oh, I
    Never felt this way
How do you give me so much pleasure
And cause me so much pain?

Also Layla by Eric Clapton and Time In A Bottle by Jim Croce are pretty much on target for unrequited love...

Or Total Eclpise of the Heart by Juice Newton.

    And.....................
One of my all time favorite songs by U2 and U2 & Mary J Blige - ONE!

    Love will abide
    Take things in stride
    Sounds like good advice
But there's no one at my side

    And time washes clean
    Love's wounds unseen
    That's what someone told me
But I don't know what it means

Cause I've done everything I know
To try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you
    For a long, long time

    Caught in my fears
    Blinking back the tears
I can't say you hurt me
When you never let me near

    And I never drew
    One response from you
    All the while you fell
    Over girls you never knew

And I've done everything I know
To try and make you mine
And I think it's gonna hurt me
    For a long, long time

Wait for the day, you go away
    Knowing that you warned me
Of the price I'd have to pay

    And life's full of loss
    Who knows the cost
    Living in the memory
Of the love that never was

Cause I've done everything I know
To try and change your mind
And I think I'm gonna miss you
    For a long, long time
And I've done everything I know
To try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you
    For a long, long time

Brings back memories of riding around in my sister's 1970 Maverick, listening to Linda plugged into the 8 track :)

Things I'd Like to Say - New Colony Six

    Baby.
    Is he looking after you?
Is he showing you the same love, the warm love,
    just like we knew?

    Baby baby.
    It's you I'm thinking of.
In the morning when I wake up.
In the evening, it's you that I dream of.

Sometimes love hurts and sometimes love's unkind
and sometimes you might feel blue.
But remember now darling if his words are real
this will never, never happen to you.

    Baby baby.
There's things I'd like to say.
I was hoping that with our love
we would get married some day.

"How Can I Not Love You"

    cannot touch
    cannot hold
    cannot be together
    cannot love
    cannot kiss
    cannot have each other
    must be strong
    and we must let go
cannot say what our hearts must know
how can I not love you

    chorus:
what do I tell my heart
when do I not want you
    here in my arms
how does one waltz away from all of the the memories
how do I not miss you when you're gone

    cannot dream
    cannot share
    sweet and tender moments
    cannot feel how we feel
    must pretend it's over
must be brave and we must go on
must not say what we've known all along
how can I not love you

    chorus

how can I not love you
must be brave and we must be strong
cannot say what we've known all along
how can i not love you
why do i tell my heart
when do i not want you here in my arms
how does one waltz away from all of the memories
how do i not miss you when you are gone
how can i not love you...when you are gone?

    Since you've been gone,
It's like I got a great big mouthful of cod liver oil.
I'm feelin' like I stuck my hand
Inside a blender and turned it on.
I've been in a <questionable word deleted on the off chance that Admin might not like it> of pain,
    Since you've been gone.

I couldn't feel any worse if you dropped
A two-ton bowling ball on my toes.
It couldn't hurt any more if you shoved
A red-hot cactus up my nose.

    Since you've been gone,
It feels like I'm getting tetanus shots every day.
    Since you've been gone,
It's like I've got an ice cream headache that won't go away.

Ever since that day you left me,
I've been so miserable, my dear.
I feel almost as bad as I did,
    When you were still here.
