Increased use of long range weapons, intelligence, and drones and the increased likelihood that any long term ground engagement would be an endless war of attrition as we have been seeing in Afghanistan means that the age of giant armies sweeping across the battlefield is at an end. We couldn't beat Russia or China in a land war, and they could never get troops into the US. The only reason that we'd need a large ground force is to occupy a country, and that is just too expensive and the results are too Pyrrhic that it seems to be more damaging than good.
