I tried googling my problem (which is on a land line) and did find a couple forums addressing it. One provided a link to a service that anyone can use to place recorded telemarketing calls. It says that the call will leave a recorded "wrong number" message if a live person answers the phone, as live people won't listen to the recorded spiel. So this sounds like what's happening to me. I don't know whose list I'm on, but this could get annoying... I'd be surprised if others here haven't gotten this message. Maybe b/c I'm home more than everyone else, so I do answer the phone!

I'm thinking that they don't want to speak to a real person because if you don't want what they are pushing you will just tell them your not interested and not listen to there sales pitch. If, on the other hand, they get to put there entire message on your answering machine they have a captive audience for the pitch. Many, like myself, cannot just delete the message. We have to listen to it and then after that it automatically deletes as soon as the next message comes in. This is just a guess but it makes sense to me on one level. I'll have to stay on the line for the next one and see if that happens.

The rest of us just get greeted by a long pause and eventual hangup, as the telemarketer is busy with the first pickup. Because THEIR time is so valuable, while I've got nothing better to do than pick up dead phone calls. >: ( I've never gotten the recorded "wrong number" message - sounds creepy. But it bothers me that machines are starting to converse with each other.

If it is in fact a telemarketing call, or a collections call, or whatever, it may pop up on the web, if you Google it. I <3 Google. LOL

Other suggestions were that it was a telemarketing call where there wasn't a live human available when you answer - apparently the law allows a pre-recorded message? Or it could be Jen's idea. I don't have caller ID, but a few people said the number was blocked. Others identified a number for the Washington Political Group.

My #1 favorite: We received a call from a contractor (or roofer~I forget) telling us (they were calling a person named Alan) that it would cost such and such amount to repair whatever it was. Our phone number is: xxx-5325. Our friends, Alan and Cherokee, have the same prefix xxx-5323! So, luckily for the person who called the wrong number, I called and gave Alan and Cherokee the message! Another time a woman called our number by mistake. After she asked for the person and I told her it was the wrong number, she apologized and then asked if I was a Christian. I said yes, so she asked if I would pray over the telephone with her. She was so thankful when we were done~I could tell she was crying. It was very touching. We also get telephone calls for a nursing home that has a very similar number or for Banner Bank since our number is the one right below that.

Lately it has been my credit card company. HAHA, good luck getting your money credit card company! It's weird, they are not even on the other end to talk to me. I can hear the background noise but the person who dialed me must be multiple dialing as suggested a few posts ago. I just ignore them know when they call, since I know what they want but I cannot help them since I am so broke I can't even pay attention right now.

Thanks to your link I know to just ignore calls from this # and a few more.
