Even if that number is actually closer to $200m you are still looking at the movie needing to join the $1bn club internationally to turn a profit. I'm just not sure that there is sufficient interest - TRON: Legacy isn't Avatar. Studios management will win no matter what happens as they'll blame Dick Cook's regime. However Sean Bailey who is producer on the movie is now head of production at the Studios so he will need to stand by his product. I really hate the current direction of the Studios building all movies around tentpole family-orientated Disney-branded movies. I miss the old days of Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures releasing features like Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poet's Society, The Sixth Sense etc. Maybe I've just got jaded but nothing has really worked for me (except for Alice). If the Studios believe that features like G-Force and The Sorcerer's Apprentice are the future then count me out.

As far as whether TRON fails or not, oftentimes the synergy can outlive a lackluster property. WaterWorld the attraction at Uni Hollywood is much better and has had a much longer life than WaterWorld the movie. The tent pole strategy works spectacularly-- when it works. Pirates of the Caribbean is proof of that. But like that little girl with the little curl, when it's bad it's AWFUL.

I'm not sure Waterworld is the best example either. You don't throw hundreds of millions of dollars on a movie and then shrug and say "hey we have a stunt show in a theme park that is still there." People aren't going to Universal solely to see Waterworld - or at least I hope not. Cars is probably the best example I can think of. A disappointment at the domestic box office (c.$245m compared to production costs of $150m) and it didn't resonate with international audiences at all - so its total box office was less than half that of TS3 this year (and in fact Cars total box office is only marginally ahead of what Up earned outside the US). However it has created a merchandising juggernaut that continues to motor along - it is that successful boys' line that the company craves so much. Maybe TRON: Legacy will add another successful boys' line to DCP. I'm just concerned that the box office is very crowded in the next eight weeks and both Tangled and TRON: Legacy have a lot of competition for people's dollars. I am significantly more buoyant about TRON: Legacy's ability to hold on to those 3D screens that Tangled which I think will get a good caning from Megamind and HP7.1

LOL! I only hope they can bring back some of the insipid dialogue from the first movie.

It was like that in the original. Did you know that computer programs, when they're happy to see each other, hug? Saw that in the original 'Tron.'
