What's the magic of the oldies?? Just pure happy, elated, awesome music that *never* gets old (ironically).

Supremes, Petula, Shirelles, Dion and the Belmonts, Del Shannon, Mamas 'n Papas, Roy Orbison, Bill Hayley and them Comets, Fats Domino, PeterPaulnMary, and many more...

    LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!!

but they can also touch that place that is painful to remember. But we think about that painful time and know we made it through and all this emotional stirring-up gives us energy . . .that youthful energy that we can conquer ANYTHING!!

So we just dance and sing!!!!

We all seem to love the music of our youth the most, but I do chuckle when I think of nursing home patients humming hip-hop some day.

Meantime, I'll take Crosby, Sinatra, Garland, Andrews, Como, et al.

And it don't hurt none that they help jazz ya up fer housework neither. ;-)

We were at my Mom's. We had a great stereo (remember those; lift the top and there's the turntable!), anyway, I had a huge collection of everything; 33's, 45's, some very old 78's I had found and kept; so my 2 year old son is listening and dancing to some 45's. I had put "Hound Dog" on. Remember how you stacked them and they dropped down to play? Anyway, here comes Elvis singing "Hound Dog". My 2 year old had never heard him before and went crazy! From that day on, he was hooked on Elvis. And we made the trip to Graceland eventually when he was in middle school. But my point is, even a 2 year old, years after Elvis is gone, knew the appeal of this great entertainer and his fun, fun music!!

But - and this is a BIG but - I part ways with him regarding oldies. I used to like them, at least oldies from the 70s and 80s. And, I tolerated anything earlier than that. But my wife is an oldies fanatic - which means that they go on in the morning, stay on all day and into the evening. In the car - even on a 500 mile trip - my wife controls the radio and, because I love her, I let her. But it's oldies, nothing but oldies all the time. And it's one of those oldies stations that owns about 50 records and just keeps playing them over and over and over and over and over ... well, you get the idea. The other day, I was so frustrated that I found myself wondering how many years Diana Ross had before she kicked the bucket and I could have some peace and quiet. Then it occurred to me that it doesn't matter if you die - they still keep playing your songs!!!

So, I obviously have a totally different take on oldies. They make me miserable and nervous and depressed. I welcome the sounds of silence after they have been on for more than 15 minutes. But, I think that's true for anything a person has too much of - the original things you liked about that "thing" become less and less enjoyable until you begin to loathe the very thing you used to like.
But, that's just me, of course!

Well John, I may be taller than you, but you're a bigger man than I am---I don't want no woman controllin' *my* radio!

And I find your anti-Oldies stance very curious...were you somehow scarred as a youngster? Were you never allowed to go "Downtown"? Did you get frustrated at never finding "The Book of Love" at your local library? Was it frustrating looking at mountains and wondering just why there "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" when there are plenty of different heights?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

(by the way, I like some '70s stuff too, and LOVE '80s)

Then you're looking at stuff from the past year or so and going "wow, oldies ar SO MUCH better!!!"

I agree with the nostalgia factor. Even if you weren't around in the "oldies days," there is an innocence to much of that music that appeals to many (apparently not me, I must be too cynical, LOL!).

I do think there's been a lot of changes in the music industry that crush a lot of the passion and originality these days. That's truly sad. But there's still a lot of awesome music coming out, and I'm sure in 20 or 30 years we'll look back fondly on the music of this time!

Now this is weird, when I think of the music I like to listen to when house cleaning, it's the stuff I can't listen to in my car - MP3s. It's a lot of very new and original stuff downloaded (legally!) from the net - mostly mashups from idcmusic.com and some goof-around stuff put up by bands that do have albums of their more "commercial" stuff.

    *Excellent* point, LuLu!

And, re: your mp3s, why not get an in-dash mp3 player? Blaupunkt makes some GREAT ones!
