Well, Jim I feel I must now award you with the award of being way too into Disneyland. (But it's okay, youve got lots of LPrs here who are just as into it.)

I wonder if this were the real inspiration for the Homer Simpson bowling ball episode.

At that time it was not a state park, but a little roadside attraction where people could dig for fossils in the shale. Walt and Lillian were on vacation on a road trip and drove through. Walt saw the tree and wanted it, but Lillian said something alone the lines of "Over my dead body." They were in the car and ready to leave, when Walt came up with an excuse to run back up like, he had the use the bathroom or something. He ran up there and made a deal and paid for the tree. It took a lot to transport the tree which is so heavy. Cranes had to lift it out and put it on a flat bed truck and then taken to a train and lifted again to put it on a special train car to handle the weight and it was transported by train to California.

Sorry, but those are only about 100 years old or so, there is something much older in the park.

The mining equipment around BTMRR in DL is also authentic, but the petrified tree is older.

They only have a cross-section slice of it, but it's about 8-10' across. There are little plaques all over it that have historical events, and point to the rings from the year that they happened in.
