ORWEN: When you're riding a Disney dark ride--or a rollercoast--what length of time satisfies you most?

ORDDU: In the past few years, it seems that many of the dark rides have been shortened too much. After the former Journey thru Imagination closed down and was drastically changed, I believe 8 minutes were taken away from us. While we understood the reaons behind it--being cost effective--we think it would have been best to imagine a way to keep the attraction's updated version just as long.

ORWEN: Then, again, the new version isn't all that great and you might not want to sit through so much of it. As it is, there are places where you just ride in total darkness.

ORDDU: Since we're not exactly rollercoast buffs, we're not aware of what the typical length of a rollercoast ride normally is. Big Thunder and Space Mountain are fairly satisfying to us. But I'm some prefer them longer. What about all of you? What's your preferred length?

    It depends.

It Depends on the theme and story and what is being conveyed. I think that Mr Toad is the right leangth considering what is going on. I think that Alice in Wodnerland is also a good leagth for its story. But I also love the lonegr larger rides. I love the caverns in Pirates of the Caribbean where it gets dark and creepy.I love some of the simple quiet parts. It is like more subtle touches in film to help with timing and atmosphere and seems to be the parts that are getting edited out of both movies and dark rides.

    ORGOCH: What the--?

ORDDU: Of course we know what you're trying to say, Daannzzz, duckling. Everything depends on something. The right length of a ride depends on how satisfied you are with WHAT you're riding, naturally.

    Already then!

Ride length is such a subjective thing. There are so many factors that come into play.

First off, is the ride occurring right after a heavy meal? Rich food from a very expensive restaurant may alter one's perception of adequate ride length. From personal experience, I would suggest that the relationship is both directly and indirectly proportional. The more expensive the restaurant, the longer the ride needs to be to achieve maximum satisfaction.

However, consuming copious amounts of rich food may result in a "Code V" situation, if the ride length is too long. And "dinner egress" will simply result in much embarrassment and bad memories during repeat visits. Not to mention steep cleaning costs, if satin or velvet was anywhere in the vicinity of the protein spill.

Second, is the ride considered indoor or outdoor? Or perhaps a combination of both? This is a crucial deciding factor, especially with regard to time of day and season. Lengthy outdoor rides after dusk are particularly problematic, given the typical temperature drop, year round. Exposure time to the brisk evening air is a key factor, as it will often dramatically shrink one's enthusiasm for night time fun. And riding in the rain, day or night, can either be serendipitous splendor, or an unplanned trip to the emergency room. Particularly during those unexpected hail storms. Ouch!

And last but not least, is the ride considered worthy of E-Ticket stature? Or is the ride simply a quick mindless diversion of the C-Ticket or B-Ticket variety? (For clearly self-evident reasons, I will not address length as it pertains to the utilitarian A-Ticket "buddy ride." If it gets you to your final destination, no worse for wear, then who the heck cares how long it takes.)

Granted, we all lust after those legendary E-Ticket rides, which range from the intense heart-pounding 60-second adrenaline rush, to the longer more methodical and immersive narrative, traversing all levels of thought and emotion, from the quiet beginning to climatic end, lasting anywhere from 5 to 12 minutes.

However, a disturbing trend has surfaced in recent memory, which is the E-Ticket hybrid of adrenaline rush plus immersive narrative. The ride is typically no longer than 3 minutes in length, characterized by an abrupt mid-ride interruption when "something goes terribly wrong." Riders are cautioned on becoming overly dependent on the 3-Minute E-Ticket experience, lest they lose their capacity to discern a "classic ride" from a "cheap thrill."

So... does that answer your question?

I think that attractions should all have their leveling off points (like the show scenes in Splash) where there is just time to come back to normal. Subtle theming works the best, but at the same time I understand why it is rarely used.

As for rollercoasters, I think Disney has some of the longest (time at least) ones out there. At Six Flags, Paramount parks, and Cedar Pointe, they usually only run one or two trains, not because they are unpopular, but because the ride is so short. Disney's are all running several trains (like the 4-6 constantly running on California Screamin') while the other parks just can't come close.

BUT, Rock n' Roller Coaster is WAYYYYYY too short.

ToT is just right, as are Splash Mountain, Winniw the Pooh, Peter Pan, Haunted Mansion, and many others.

I like my coaster rides to be longer than RnRC - more like California Creamin', time-wise.

I have to agree that it all depends. A 2-minutes pirates ride would be underwhelming, to say the least and I think the WDW version is too short. But 17 minutes for Snow White would make for very few re-rides.

Peter Pan is WAY too short considering the line (I love it though, and always go on it at least once). California Screamin' is perfect length-wise, not so long everyone gets sick but still nice and long.

Peter Pan could easily be two to three times longer in duration to satisfy me. I think Winnie the Poo is just right.

I agree Universe of Energy is 40 to 45 minutes long. My compaint there is that they rush you through the dinosaurs ( which is far better than Dinosaur over at DAK ). I guess if I want a long duration ride in the future I will just have to settle on either the monorail between TTC and EPCOT or the boats between EPCOT and MGM.
