    Dear Mr. Blixt:

The very day after I sent off my letter of congratulations to you and Rose on your retirement, I received the news that Rose died. On behalf of the University of Minnesota, I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to you and your family on her death.

Rose strengthened the University. General College and the College of Design, University governance, equity, and diversity, and even my inauguration were all improved by her commitment and service and by the expertise she so generously shared. I hope it has been a cause of pride to you both that through her dedication, your wife contributed importantly to the University of Minnesota fulfilling its vital educational and public service mission.

There can be little consolation for the loss of such a beloved companion, but I hope it can be of some solace to you that your and Rose's colleagues and friends at the University are keeping you in our thoughts. I wish you comfort in your memories and strength from the company of those you love. Please do not hesitate to call on me if I can be of any assistance to you in the days ahead.

    Sincerely,

    Robert H. Bruininks
    President>>

When I was a sophomore in college the Dad died. My Mom went to the funeral and when she gave her condolences, the Mom just kept telling her she couldn't believe how many people came. A lot of people she didn't really know, because they only interacted once or twice. She said she wished her husband could see how many lives he had touched.

According to PTI on ESPN today, it's National Do Something Nice Day. We sometimes talk about letting your loved ones know how much they mean to you. But maybe we also need to let those people, who we might not be all that close, know that they too, have made an impact on your life in a positive way.

I'm so honored to have been her husband.
