Were in the park at 9:40 am (Sunshine Plaza and Condor Flats are open 1/2 hour before park opening most days I believe). We headed over to GRR and got our WOC fast passes at 9:45 and got a great area for the 9:00 pm viewing.

You might not have the best spot within the viewing area, but it will be the early show. On busier days, obviously the tickets run out faster, but it seems like this strategy should work. Then again, you'll need to eat lunch (or dinner) at some point, and the food in the parks is fairly expensive everywhere (assume at least $10-12 per adult), so it just may be worth the extra couple bucks to get the picnics to ensure you get a good spot at the early show. Plus, you get a handy reusable bag with each picnic, so that helps even out the costs even more.
