Back in the day, we used to buy single 45s -- simply because we wanted to hear just that one song.

Many times, if I bought an album [I'm thinking of the band 'Chicago'], they had one hit on side 2 -- and the rest was somewhat painful to listen to.

Anyway, I tend to cherry pick the songs I want to buy. And I also subscribe to RealRhapsody -- which costs about $10 a month, and you can listen to complete songs.

So I listen to songs there, and if I really like them, I'll buy them from iTunes.

Occasionally, I'll buy a complete album -- Earth Wind & Fire 'Illuminations' this past month -- but it's fun to just listen to an album too, without having to make the commitment to own it for life.

Sometimes it is song I heard on the radio and I say "oh cool I want that song" but I don't know the artist well enough yet so I'll sample a song or two to decide if I want the whole thing, sometimes from that process I'll get the whole album or decide "naw I just want that song I like"
