    Tasty, delicious, WHALE!

Yummy! Seriously, it was good stuff!

Endangered? Heck, I could eat my way to their extinction, these suckers are so lip smackin good.

Kind of a cross between a tuna fish sandwich and a rib eye steak.

And, the funny thing is, I HATE fish. Seafood makes me wanna puke. But not whale, baby. The Japanese have the right idea here. MAN, it was good.

Gee, I wonder if I was dining on one of those "experimental" ones the Japanese lobbied to catch in the name of science. Sure did teach my taste buds a thing or two. Finger lickin good.

Kinda makes me wanna take a quick trip over to old Korea to visit WD and try me some Dog! :D

So, whale eating. Smart move, or horrible and inhumane? I say, don't knock it til you've tried it.

<===wondering if the law offices of Beau and Mandy are gonna be my only advocates here.

<Although slackening demand has pushed wholesale prices of whale meat down 10% to 30% over the past year alone, it remains costly, at a wholesale rate that ranges between $3.70 and $70 per lb., depending on the cut. The marbled tail meat is prized by connoisseurs, as is whale sashimi, which is eaten with grated ginger or garlic to mask the odor. "I've had the meat," says Miki Ikari, 30, an account manager in Tokyo, "and I wasn't impressed. It could disappear from the earth, and I wouldn't miss it one bit.">

This is how I had it. Didn't notice any smell, but it was served chilled (maybe that's why they chilled it lol). Tried it with soy sauce, garlic, ginger, plain and in various combinations.

Honestly, I thought plain was best. The soy sauce made it a little too salty. Garlic and Ginger were okay though.

Of course, with whale being a mammal, it's a lot closer to a cow that swims in the ocean than it is to most seafood. It reminded me most of a "gamey" beef.

Have you tried horse sashimi yet?

    How was it anyway?

I was NOT impressed, and thought I had had better at normally-priced restaurants in the US for a fraction of the price. That experience kind of made me gun-shy about expensive restaurants in Japan unless they are recommended to me or have a well-known reputation.

Where did you have the kujira? I had it at Kujira-ya (how original, a restaurant called "Whale Restaurant") in Shibuya (neighborhood of Tokyo for those not familiar). It was an interesting place to say the least. I think that whale might have been all they served, it was available in something like 30 or 40 different dishes, using every conceivable part of the whale. You could get sushi/sashimi, grilled filets, and you could even get organs much like you'd get "liver and onions" in the US.

<<< Gee, I wonder if I was dining on one of those "experimental" ones the Japanese lobbied to catch in the name of science >>>

Of course you did - isn't all whale meat served in Japan a by-product of the "experimental scientific" catches done in the name of marine biology, since international treaty prohibits the catching of whales for food? But once the hundreds of whales caught by Japan each year are examined, it would be a shame to let the meat go to waste, now wouldn't it? I'm glad I was able to do my part to help whale conservation by supporting the important scientific research done by the Japanese whaling fleet. Uh huh.

Now that you've had kujira, are you now looking forward to trying gojira if you have a chance?

We miss 90 percent of the stuff cause we can't READ and it's hard to tell what's going on inside just from walking by (avoid, or don't, pink kanji signs based on what you're looking for lol).

Personally, I think anyone who's ever killed a mosquito is a hypocrite if they are against killing certain, "cute" animals. Moreso if they've ever gone fishing. And, of course, if they ever ate chicken, cow, or pig meat they should really just shut up. ;)
