Once they hit Skull Island the film becomes very scary. The islanders, the V-rex scene and omg any scene involving insects. The people in our group that saw the film are adults and even we were pretty scared at those scenes.

And, y'know, I was really impressed with Jack Black as Carl Denham...I didn't think he could pull it off, since most of his past roles have been comedic, but I'll be darned, he did a really good job.

Yes, some of the scenes are beat to death and might be "overkill" (dinosaurs, pygmies) but they were still terrific scenes that might have benefited by being a bit shorter and tighter. Kong is the star - a fully realized digital leading man, er, ape. He's expressive and fearsome, yet tender and sympathetic when he needs to be. Nice job. The best part of the movie is skull island. The voyage to the island introduces the characters nicely and looks great while doing it. The change back to NY is abrupt and to my taste the movie takes a downturn at this point, and becomes even more preposterous. But that's okay because after all it IS 'king kong' we're talking about, and the story HAS to relocate to new york. In the past month or so, I've seen 'brokeback mountain' and 'narnia' and didn't care for either one. My expectations for 'kong' were low, but for now I think it's my favorite movie since 'batman begins'. Could it have been shorter and tighter - sure. But once I'm hooked into a movie and feel that I'm in the hands of a gifted storyteller, I'm content to let it unfold as it will. This is just a terrific movie that hit me right - all the way through.

I know hype is a dirty word around here. I thought this movie was a great ride. Exactly what those huge AMC screens and blasting speakers were made for. Most movies I'd rather wait to watch in the comfort of my own home. Gotta see this one in the theatre with the best system and the biggest screen! I hate it when I get the puny screen or when they don't have the sound turned up enough. This was definitely the big screen and you can feel the rumble in the seats. It was all overkill but I wasn't complaining. I actually liked the over the top action. So does that make it not overkill to me? Who cares? Didn't have to think at all and was loving it because sometimes you just need to give your mind a rest. Have fun. Go along for the ride. Entertainment is good. That's why we love Disney, right? I really enjoyed Narnia as a kid flick. And I still don't know if I want to see Brokeback on the big screen or just wait till it comes out on DVD. But with all of the hype surrounding these few movies, for me it's been a good 2/3 so far where it's met or exceeded my expectations.
